Where to stay in Wales

How to choose your bases, what to budget, and real hotels in each destination, with live rates on Booking.com.

Most visitors choose two or three bases: one in the south (Cardiff, Gower or Tenby), one in the west or middle, and one in the north (Conwy, Llandudno or Snowdonia). Pick by what you want from your days: city life, beaches, mountains or a quiet country inn.

Price bands (approximate)

Prices vary widely with the season and events. As a rough guide for a double room per night: budget hostels, inns and chain hotels from around £60–100; mid-range hotels and inns around £100–180; upscale and country-house hotels from around £180, and more in August and during big events.

When to book

For the coast in July and August, book two to three months ahead; for Hay-on-Wye during the festival, even earlier. Cardiff fills up on rugby and concert weekends. Outside the summer holidays you can often book a few days before.

Practical notes

  • Visitor levy: Wales has legislated for a small overnight visitor levy that councils may introduce; check whether your rate includes any local charge.
  • Inns and pubs with rooms: often the best value in the countryside, with dinner downstairs.
  • Self-catering: cottages are very common on the coast, often with minimum stays in summer.
  • Parking: rarely easy in old towns such as Conwy and Tenby. Ask the hotel before you arrive.

Accommodation questions

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay for North Wales?

Llandudno or Conwy if you want tours and trains; Betws-y-Coed or Llanberis if you want to walk in the mountains.

Where should I stay in Pembrokeshire?

St Davids for the islands and wild coast, Tenby for beaches and restaurants. See our Pembrokeshire guide.

Are hotels cheaper outside Cardiff?

Usually, except on the coast in high summer.

Should I stay in Portmeirion?

If you can: overnight guests have the village to themselves in the evening.

Do I need to book far ahead?

For August, festival weeks and rugby weekends, yes. At other times a few weeks is usually enough.

Are the hotels here all verified?

They are real properties, but we have not stayed in all of them. Read recent reviews before booking.
