Areas: where to base yourself
- Brecon: central, with shops, restaurants and the T4 bus.
- Crickhowell: pretty and foodie, near the Black Mountains.
- Abergavenny: a market town on the railway, famous for its food festival.
- Pontneddfechan: a small village at the start of the waterfall walks.
Food and drink
The eastern side of the park is known for its gastropubs, Welsh lamb and beef, and local cheeses. Penderyn whisky is distilled on the park’s southern edge and offers tours.
Walking safety
The Beacons are gentle-looking but exposed; weather changes quickly and cloud can hide the paths. Carry a map, waterproofs and warm layers, and check the mountain forecast. Military training takes place in parts of the park.
Stargazing
On clear, moonless nights the Milky Way is visible from many car parks and viewpoints. The Usk Reservoir and the Llanthony area are popular spots; dress warmly even in summer.
