Areas: where to base yourself
- Mumbles: restaurants, sea views and easy buses.
- Swansea Marina and city centre: hotels near the station and museums.
- Rhossili and Port Eynon: the far end of Gower, for beaches and sunsets.
- Reynoldston and Oxwich: inland quiet in the middle of the peninsula.
Food and drink
Try laverbread (a purée of seaweed) and cockles from Penclawdd, traditionally fried with bacon for breakfast, Gower salt-marsh lamb and Mumbles ice cream. Swansea Market is the place to taste them.
Tides and safety
Worm’s Head and several coves are cut off by fast tides. Read the tide tables, and only swim at lifeguarded beaches in season. Rip currents are common at Rhossili and Llangennith.
Surfing
Llangennith, at the north end of Rhossili Bay, is the best-known surf beach in Wales; surf schools rent boards and wetsuits.
